DIY Fashion: How To Make Copper Heels

As promised, I'm presenting the fashion how to that I mentioned in yesterday's post.

These copper heels are really easy to do. And they can dramatically change the look of a basic pair of shoes.

Materials and tools: A pair of shoes in need of a makeover, scissors, fine sandpaper or a sanding sponge, a butter knife, and copper tape.

Copper tape is sold at hardware stores and gardening centers. Gardeners use it on their flower pots as a man slug repeller!

Step 1: Use the sandpaper to remove the smooth finish on your heels. This will help the copper foil tape stick. Rough up the finish a little bit. Just until the surface looks less shiny and more matte. Wash the heels with dishwashing soap to remove dust and oils. Dry thoroughly.

Step 2: Use the scissors to cut a piece of copper tape that is a little longer than the length of your heel.

Copper tape has a paper backing, like a sticker. Gently fold one corner back and forth until the backing separates from the copper foil. You can easily peel the rest off.

Step 3: Stick the piece of copper to the heel. Press and smooth the copper down so it sticks well. But don't worry about wrinkles. That's part of the charm.

Don't press the copper tape into the upper. The finish of the leather might be damaged by sticky adhesive. Use the butter knife to gently score the copper foil at the seam. This will cut the foil so it's flush to your heel. Peel the extra off of the upper for a nice clean edge.

Step 4: Repeat and add more tape all around the heel. Overlap the edges of the tape for good coverage. At the base of the heel, just fold the copper over the edge. You don't have to completely cover the sole.

Step 5: If your heel has a corner, or a sharp curve like mine, use scissors to snip into the corner. Now you can easily wrap the foil around without it wrinkling. Fill in any bare spots with smaller pieces of copper tape. And trim off the excess.
