Cycle Style - How I Bike in Heels

Biking in high-heels is the easiest way to gear up your cycle style. Like me, you might have a pair of heels that fit well, but aren't comfy for a long stroll. Why not take them for a spin instead?

Do keep the ball of your foot on the pedal. This is actually the proper cycling position for better efficiency. Meaning you don't have to work as hard to go as fast. High heeled boots offer more ankle support making them good for your first try.

Don't wedge your pedal against the heel. That puts uncomfortable pressure on your instep. If your sole slips off the pedal, stick a couple of pieces of duck tape on your sole. The non-sticky side of duck tape has enough grip to keep you on your toes. And the printed duck tapes add unexpected flair to the bottom of your shoe.

For this outfit, I wanted to play with textures. I was reluctant to wear velvet with velvet but I think it works beautifully. I'm wearing an old Necessary Objects jacket as a blouse, similar to this one.

Faux leather helmet by Giro. My gold sunnies are the Contessa style (now only available in black) by AJ Morgan.

The gold leather of my Zara jacket has enough richness to stand up to the velvet overload. The chocolate-brown velvet jeans are by 7 For All Mankind and available here.

These John Fluevog Libby Smith's are absolutely my favorite pair of boots. I bike in them all the time, and they have taken on nice distressing over the past two years. I'm sorry to say that I wasn't always careful, and they've been kissed with bike grease. That's the reason I switched to a greaseless belt-drive bike.

Sadly, the Libby Smiths are only available in black on the official Fluevog website. I've been hunting for the other fabulous colorways like purple and cognac for ages. Let me know if you see them in 9.5!

Bike in a Skirt: Shiny Cycle Chic

I frequently bike in a skirt. For this look, I wanted to wear something shiny and eye-catching. Inspiration was kicked off by this amazing black leather boot with a copper colored cuff. I keep it on my Pinterest, naturally.

Laurence Dacade leather boot

It starts off with the copper bottoms. I turned my classic black Born Mary Janes, like these, into a pair of copper heels. The full DIY instructions are coming out tomorrow. The process is fun and simple, and has a big impact.

I layered ornate stockings, like these, over chocolate brown tights, a stylish way to get extra warmth and <ahem> coverage. My copper skirt was on sale for about $10 from American Apparel. My blouse is vintage western wear, similar to this. And I'm wearing my faux-leather covered helmet.

I made my bike at the now-closed San Francisco outpost of the Bamboo Bike Studio. A lot of people ask about the Bambeauty when we're out & about together. I get questions like "How'd you get your bike to look like bamboo?" and "Who made that for you?"

To carry my u-lock and other biking essentials, I used cable ties to attach a thrifted satchel to the rails under my seat. It's been so handy and cute. I think I want to develop the notion more and make something really presentable.

Emerald Green: Yesterday's Swing Coat in Today's Color

Emerald Green was selected by Pantone as the color of 2013. What does that mean anyway? It seems downright silly to pick a color for an entire year.

The reason for all the fuss is a material reality. Textile factories need at least a year to produce fabric in a new color, even in this age of instant gratification. And it's pointless to make a color that no one will want. So the factories pay Pantone to tell them which color to produce two years before the products hit retail.

But why is Pantone telling them what color to make? Don't worry, they aren't! They are making their best educated-guess about which color consumers will want in 2013.

Pantone's forecasters spent years analyzing movements in art, movies, politics, economics, weather, and sociology. From there, they made a psychological profile of a typical 2013 consumer. And according to this profile, Emerald is the color most likely to get a shopper to part with their hard-earned green in 2013.

So really, Pantone's prediction says something about us. And our collective mood as consumers.

Lively. Radiant. Lush... A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.

That's the feeling we value this year. Who couldn't use a little more well-being and balance? Especially when you're riding a bike.

Maybe I'm moving past my red phase? This outfit was partly inspired by Catherine Baba, and partly by these Prada sunglasses I tried on yesterday. However, I ended up getting the Tom Ford aviators instead. They suited my round little face better.

My coat is vintage from the Haight Street Goodwill (one of the best ever). But here's a similar coat. My dress is Tracy Feith for Target, similar to this affordable option from Old Navy. I'm wearing American Apparel's Disco Pants as tights. My leather spats are from the Army surplus store on Haight Street, but you can get the same ones for $30 here. I wear them with the buckles on the outside over Born Mary Janes, similar to these.

Cycle Style - SF Bike Party and Wear Red Day

The theme for the last SF Bike Party was "Red" in honor of National Wear Red Day. I got to wear my favorite red boots from Milan.

Any excuse to wear my favorite red lipstick lip stain: Josie Maran Magic Marker in Flamenco. Observing the classic makeup rule of lips or eyes, I kept the rest of my look simple. My base is Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. I smudged a bit of Urban Decay 24/7 Black Eyeliner on the outer half of my lash line. I made sure to get the pencil between my lashes and along the upper waterline.

After that I curled my lashes and applied Maybelline XXL Mascara with the primer. Since I tend to get dark circles, I used the amazing Benefit Watt's Up highlighter in the inner corners of my eyes. Just to brighten things up. I skipped the blush since I was about to pedal my way to a natural healthy glow. And I finished with a generous dusting of Cover Girl pressed powder. Check out my Daily Beauty How To for more info.

The dress is a vintage number that I found in my mom's closet. Seriously, an amazing score.

But isn't that frustrating? So I found a few similar dresses for you here. Because my dress is a little too big, I cinched it in with an American Apparel elastic belt. My over-the-knee socks are also from American Apparel. I like how the dried blood Burgundy color contrasts with the brighter red, but they don't stay up as well as these. My helmet is like this one from Giro.

There is so much material in the gathered skirt of this dress! While riding, I found it helpful to tie a couple of knots in it to keep from snagging the delicate material. It's not totally necessary, but I like how it makes me look a bit like a can-can dancer.

Let's go!

I'm so excited to watch the SF 49ers play in the Super Bowl! It's a great excuse to pull out my gold jacket.

These pictures are from the Artcrank SFO event. There was an awesome photo booth courtesy of Liquid, formerly Spinlister, (and now on a break for winter).
