San Francisco Tweed Ride 2016
Melinda Stockmann Sullivan, Mary Kay Chin, and more friends at the San Francisco Tweed Ride 2016.
Last November, we were able to pack up the baby and attend the San Francisco Tweed Ride. The whole event was organized by our dear friend Melinda Greene, who also happened to make these charming commemorative lapel pins.
This was Melinda's second year organizing the ride and she did another fantastic job. Starting in Dolores Park and wiggling up to the Conservatory of Flowers, the group finished at the Twentieth Century Cafe in Hayes Valley. A lovely way to pass the afternoon!
Clever DIY tweed frame bag made from a wool jacket.
A fine specimen of dapper bike style.
Beautiful Melissa Bryden from Sacramento enjoys a spot of tea outside of the Conservatory of Flowers
Best Dressed Couple, perhaps?
These two look like movie stars from another era.

Mike cleans up good!
Jill Quindiagan's Sherlock Holmes inspired Lolita fashions.
Great spot for a picnic.
One of the many bike babies that rode with us.
Can you spot the tourists?
Mary Kay Chin stuns in her 80s-does-40s polka dot frock.
This outfit would also be fantastic for Bike-To-Work Day.
An exceptionally elegant lady in a fine feathered cap.
Rubin helped organize the very first San Francisco Tweed Rides and came back to help guide us through a few of the tricky turns.
Oran, proprietor of Relic Vintage on Haight, my favorite vintage shop in the city.
Riding a penny farthing through the streets of San Francisco is no mean feat.
One of Oran's well-dressed friends.
Utterly charming.
This elegant lady also rolled with Oran's crew,
From the touches of orange on her dress, handbag, and chapeau to her high heeled oxford shoes, this lady had one of the best ensembles at the ride.
A masterpiece of matching: note how the orange beading of her handbag coordinate with her brake cables and recall the floral print of her dress.
I'm getting early-90's vibes from her outfit, in the best possible way. Does anybody else see it? The folding bike is a smart choice for getting around the San Francisco Bay Area.
Mike and Jill are always a delight!
Great style and good genes. This mother-daughter pair came all the way from Sacramento to attend the Tweed Ride! And check out that cute penny-farthing print on her blue skirt. You can find more bike print dresses here.
Can't get enough of a good Bowler hat.
See what I mean? Chris Tafoya gets it.
Her tweed skirt is so flirty, belying this fabric's frumpy reputation. I would wear this outfit everyday.
This was about half the group, lined up to exit Golden Gate Park.
Kevin and Mary Kay. If you ride regularly in San Francisco, especially if you attend Bike Party, you will probably run into either of these two.
Magnificent Mother-of-Twins Charlie Flaherty and her miraculous (borrowed) baby-toting bike. Not shown: the other baby who happened to be riding with his dad.
Mark Stockmann Sullivan is modeling the stuffing out of his wool and corduroy ensemble. And I am struck by how delightfully incongruous our California palm trees and Mission style architecture look as a backdrop for an anglophilic bike ride.
Jon, my better half, looking exceedingly bike handsome as he rides with our infant son, Valentine. His tweed suit is from Relic Vintage. It's actually the suit he was wearing when we got married!
I think I want to be Mary Kay when I grow up.
Too busy behind the camera to pose for an outfit shot of my own!
Need some more tweed? I wasn't the only photographer on the ride. You can find more photos from that day on the Facebook event page. Follow the SF Tweed group to get updates about the next ride, as well as other tweed rides in California and beyond.

Hi Dr. Harmstead,
Thanks so much for reaching out!
To keep up the date with the San Francisco Tweed Ride, please check the Facebook page at this link: https://www.facebook.com/SF-Tweed-106656826032964/.
At the moment, San Francisco is under a shelter-in-place order through the end of May. Groups are forbidden from gathering. I’m not sure what the situation will be in November, but until there is widespread distribution of a vaccine for Covid-19, I anticipate that Bike Pretty will not co-host a Tweed Ride in San Francisco.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Thanks,
Melissa
Hi,
Is there any news about the 2020 SF Tweed Ride. I’m from up in the Sierra and want to make plans to be involved this year.
Dr. J.H. Armstead
Hi Therese,
Thanks so much for reaching out!
We have not encountered such a product in our travels, but you are not the first person to mention those concerns. Thanks so much for sharing!
Please let me know if you have any other questions :)
Thanks!
I was wondering if you had anything to protect our hips or backs. We don’t always hit our head when we fall. Those are two of the other most common areas we land on when we fall. It’s dangerous out there!
Merry Christmas,
Therese
