How to bike in a skirt: DIY Skirt Band
Hi everyone! We are Maja and Maja two best friends from Croatia and we are so happy to be guests here on the Bike Pretty blog with our DIY. Thanks so much for welcoming us! We almost always wear skirts or dresses while biking. And we had the typical “everyone will see our panties” problem while riding our bikes. Then one day while doing another DIY for our blog  we came up with the idea to use magnets to keep our skirts in place.

The holiday season is in full swing. Lots of occasions to celebrate with friends and family. And there's always that person who whips out the camera (okay, that's usually me. In the world of bike fashion bloggery, helmets are a polarizing moral issue. In terms of controversy, it even beats out the Idaho stop. Personally, I've been a daily cyclist for over a decade, and I usually wear my helmet. It's a nice piece of protective gear, and some styles are actually quite cute! But I've long suspected that helmets are not the end-all be-all of safe biking. Have the benefits of bicycle helmets been exaggerated? Via Science Nordic

You're walking down the street, minding your own business, thinking about your life and– "Smile! It's not that bad," or worse, interrupts your thought process. Looking back on my own experiences as a woman in the US, I realized that a big part of the appeal of biking was the way it renders a lot of street harassment out of earshot. For her part, artist-activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh confronts the intimidation (which is a normalized and engrained part of our culture, btw) directly with her Stop Telling Women To Smile street art project. Video: A freaking shampoo commercial gave me chills. By the end of the minute-long spot, I had nearly burst into tears, yet also felt hopeful about the future. (Listen, I was not in the throes of PMS!) Watch this ad by Pantene Phillipines. Even the cover of a cover (Mad World, originally by Tears for Fears) that was used so brilliantly in another amazing ad (for a video game) is a statement about the messages we receive as part of society. But for gosh's sakes, don't read the comments section! You've been warned.

DIY Fashion: How To Make Copper Heels

As promised, I'm presenting the fashion how to that I mentioned in yesterday's post.

These copper heels are really easy to do. And they can dramatically change the look of a basic pair of shoes.

Materials and tools: A pair of shoes in need of a makeover, scissors, fine sandpaper or a sanding sponge, a butter knife, and copper tape.

Copper tape is sold at hardware stores and gardening centers. Gardeners use it on their flower pots as a man slug repeller!

Step 1: Use the sandpaper to remove the smooth finish on your heels. This will help the copper foil tape stick. Rough up the finish a little bit. Just until the surface looks less shiny and more matte. Wash the heels with dishwashing soap to remove dust and oils. Dry thoroughly.

Step 2: Use the scissors to cut a piece of copper tape that is a little longer than the length of your heel.

Copper tape has a paper backing, like a sticker. Gently fold one corner back and forth until the backing separates from the copper foil. You can easily peel the rest off.

Step 3: Stick the piece of copper to the heel. Press and smooth the copper down so it sticks well. But don't worry about wrinkles. That's part of the charm.

Don't press the copper tape into the upper. The finish of the leather might be damaged by sticky adhesive. Use the butter knife to gently score the copper foil at the seam. This will cut the foil so it's flush to your heel. Peel the extra off of the upper for a nice clean edge.

Step 4: Repeat and add more tape all around the heel. Overlap the edges of the tape for good coverage. At the base of the heel, just fold the copper over the edge. You don't have to completely cover the sole.

Step 5: If your heel has a corner, or a sharp curve like mine, use scissors to snip into the corner. Now you can easily wrap the foil around without it wrinkling. Fill in any bare spots with smaller pieces of copper tape. And trim off the excess.

Braid How To - Milkmaid Style

I've wanted to post this braid how-to for a long time. Milkmaid braids, also known as Heidi braids, look really tough, but are actually quite simple. Know how to make pigtails? A simple braid? Can you pin up a bun? Then you have the skills!

Here's my step-by-step guide:

Assemble your tools: A comb; Clear, ouch-less hair ties, at least 4; Bobby pinsthat match your hair color; Hairspray (Samy Skyscraper is comparable to L'Oréal's Elnett, but half the price); A hand mirror so you can check the back of your head.

Put your hair into pigtails. Secure with the clear hair ties. You want the base of your pigtail near the top of your ear.

For shorter-than-shoulder-length hair, place the pigtail at the level of your temple. It's okay if the hair at the nape of your neck is loose. That's what the bobby pins and hairspray are for!

Milkmaid_Braids12 Milkmaid_Braids12

Braid your pigtails all the way to the tips. When you can't braid anymore, fold the tip of your braid over, making a little loop and secure with the clear hair tie.

Get all your bobby pins handy. Keep them in your mouth.

Place one braid across the top of your head. Start pinning. Use as many pins as it takes! Work from the tip of your braid and pin all the way to the base of the pigtail. Shake your head around a bit. If the braid feels loose, then add some more pins.

Repeat for the other braid. Tuck the tip of the second braid under the first braid for a neater look. And then pin down any stray tufts of hair with more bobby pins.

Spray with plenty of hairspray. Don't skimp.

This is a great hairstyle for any time of year, not just Oktoberfest. It's perfect for second--or even third--day hair. And when you take your hair down, you'll have pretty mermaid waves.

Of course I needed a Bavarian-inspired outfit to complement by Heidi braids. I got my dirndl, similar to this one, at a thrift shop in Florence. Because I'm a nineties-kinda-girl, I paired it with a long-sleeve pink thermal. My stockings are actually extra long thigh-highs from American Apparel. On my feet I'm wearing spats from the Army surplus store over Born Mary Janes, similar to these.
