Is Your Helmet Cover Catching Wind? Here’s How to Fix It

I love a breezy ride, but not when it feels like my helmet is about to fly off. 😩
If you've ever felt your helmet lift or shift after adding a cover, you're not alone. Luckily, it's usually an easy fix with a quick strap adjustment.
Let’s break down what’s happening and how to solve it.
The Problem: Wind is Sneaking Under the Front of Your Helmet
If the helmet cover is catching too much air, it’s probably because the front of the helmet is sitting too high on your forehead. That angle acts like a sail for the wind, especially on faster rides. That can create an annoying (and distracting) pulling sensation.
Even if your helmet feels snug without a cover, the position of the helmet and straps can change the feel once a cover is added.
The Fix: Adjust the Front of the Y-Straps
Here’s how to improve your helmet fit in 30 seconds:
-
Check where your helmet sits.
It should be low and level, not tilted back. You want the front edge to sit about 1–2 finger widths above your eyebrows. -
Adjust the Y-straps around your ears.
Shorten the front part of the Y so that the helmet sits lower and more forward. This helps the wind glide over instead of catching underneath. -
Double-check the chin strap.
It should feel snug when you open your mouth wide, but not uncomfortable.
